Understanding Mechanical Coverage Billing
Understand how half-term billing works and when your payments and coverage begin and end
Overview
Mechanical coverage is billed monthly, but payments are only made during the first half of your policy term.
This means you pay off the full cost of the policy earlier than the coverage ends.
During the second half of your policy, your coverage stays active without additional monthly payments.
This guide explains:
- How monthly billing works
- How long you make payments
- How long your coverage lasts
- What happens after your payments end
How Half-Term Billing Works
Mechanical coverage uses half-term billing.
You make monthly payments for half of your policy length, but your coverage lasts for the entire term.
Example
|
Coverage Term |
Payment Period |
Coverage Without Payments |
|
24 months |
Pay monthly for 12 months |
Covered for the final 12 months with no payments |
|
36 months |
Pay monthly for 18 months |
Covered for the final 18 months with no payments |
|
48 months |
Pay monthly for 24 months |
Covered for the final 24 months with no payments |
After the payment period ends, your policy remains active for the rest of the coverage term.
Example timeline:
Month 1–12 → Monthly payments
Month 13–24 → Coverage continues with no payments
Monthly Billing Schedule
Premiums are billed at the beginning of each month.
Billing follows a monthly billing cycle, not the exact date you purchased coverage. The first and last payments may be prorated based on your purchase date.
Example:
- Policy purchased: March 15
- Your first payment is prorated based on your purchase date.
- First billing cycle: April 1
- Future payments: The first day of each month
- Your last payment may also be prorated to reflect the remaining balance.
When Coverage Begins
Coverage does not start immediately after purchase.
Most policies include a waiting period, which ends when both of these criteria are met:
- 30 days after purchase, and
- 1,000 miles driven
Once the waiting period ends, the coverage becomes active.
What Happens After Payments End
Once you finish the required monthly payments:
- Your policy remains active
- Your coverage continues
- No additional monthly payments are required
Coverage continues until the end of the selected policy term or mileage limit, whichever comes first.
