Understanding Mechanical Coverage: Coverages & Exclusions
Mechanical Coverage helps pay for certain covered breakdowns after the waiting period is met, subject to the terms of the plan you selected.
What Mechanical Coverage includes
Coverage depends on the plan selected at purchase. Plans are cumulative, which means each higher tier includes the coverage in the tier below it.
Powertrain
Powertrain coverage includes core drivetrain components, such as:
- engine
- transmission
- drivetrain
Plus
Plus includes everything in Powertrain, plus additional systems such as:
- air conditioning
- electrical
- fuel system
- suspension
- steering
- brakes
Premium
Premium includes everything in Plus, plus additional components such as:
- seals
- gaskets
- additional systems
- hybrid or EV battery, where included by the plan
How long coverage lasts
Mechanical Coverage stays active for the term and mileage selected on the plan.
Coverage ends when the first of these happens:
- the selected number of years is reached, or
- the selected mileage limit is reached
In other words, coverage lasts until the earlier of the two.
For example, if a policy includes a 3-year term and a mileage limit, coverage ends when either:
- 3 years have passed, or
- the vehicle reaches the selected mileage limit
The exact term and mileage limit are shown in the policy documents.
When coverage starts
Mechanical Coverage does not begin immediately after purchase.
A waiting period applies, and coverage starts only after both of these are met:
- 30 days have passed, and
- 1,000 miles have been driven
Coverage limits and deductible
Mechanical Coverage is subject to the limits and deductible shown in the policy.
Important details may include:
- deductible options such as $250 or $500
- a maximum mechanical coverage limit up to the value of the vehicle
Roadside Assistance
Roadside Assistance may be included with your Mechanical Coverage plan if it was selected at the time of purchase.
What Roadside Assistance includes
Roadside Assistance can help with certain unexpected situations while you’re on the road, such as:
- towing
- battery jump-starts
- flat tire assistance
- lockout services
- fuel delivery (cost of fuel not included)
Coverage details
- Roadside Assistance typically has a $0 deductible
- Service is subject to a per-incident limit (for example, up to $500)
- Coverage is available only while the Mechanical Coverage policy is active
Important limitations
- Roadside Assistance is not available as a standalone product and must be included with a Mechanical Coverage plan
- Services are limited to covered roadside events and may have per-use limits
- Availability may vary by location and service provider
- Any costs above the coverage limit are the responsibility of the policyholder
What is not covered
Mechanical Coverage does not cover every repair. Common exclusions include:
Maintenance and wear items
Items or services related to routine maintenance are not covered. This can include things like:
- oil changes
- tune-ups
- filters
- brake pads
- other regularly replaced service items
Misuse or preventable damage
Damage may not be covered if it results from:
- misuse
- neglect
- lack of required maintenance
- continued operation after a problem appears
Modifications
Breakdowns or damage related to non-factory or unauthorized modifications are not covered.
Environmental or external damage
Damage caused by outside events is generally not covered. This may include:
- weather
- flooding
- fire
- collision
- vandalism
- other external causes
Cosmetic items
Mechanical Coverage is generally for covered mechanical breakdowns, not cosmetic issues. Cosmetic items may include:
- trim
- upholstery
- paint
- glass appearance issues
- other non-functional components
Unauthorized repairs
Repairs completed without required approval may not be covered.
Which vehicles are not eligible
Eligibility rules apply before coverage can be purchased.
Vehicles may not be eligible if they:
- are older than the allowed model year range
- exceed the allowed mileage at the time of purchase
- are not registered on the required platform, if platform registration is required
Based on current launch rules, examples of vehicles that may not be eligible include:
- vehicles older than model year 2014
- vehicles with 150,000 miles or more
- vehicles not registered on Turo
Important limitations
Before relying on coverage, keep these points in mind:
- Coverage only applies to covered components and covered breakdowns.
- Higher-tier plans include the lower-tier coverage.
- Coverage is subject to the policy’s terms, limits, deductible, and exclusions.
- The waiting period must be satisfied before coverage begins.
- Coverage ends when the selected term or selected mileage limit is reached, whichever comes first.
