Understanding Mechanical Coverage: Where Can I Get Coverage Today?
Mechanical Coverage is available in most U.S. states. This article explains where coverage is currently offered and what happens if a covered vehicle travels across state lines—including into states where coverage is not sold.
Overview
Mechanical Coverage is available in most U.S. states, with a few exceptions.
What usually matters for eligibility is:
- where the vehicle is registered
- where the policy is issued
- whether the vehicle meets the program’s eligibility requirements
Even if coverage is not sold in a specific state, a vehicle that already has an active policy may still be able to travel through that state temporarily.
This article covers:
- where Mechanical Coverage is currently available
- where it is not available
- what happens if your car travels across state lines
- how mechanical claims and roadside assistance work while traveling
Where Mechanical Coverage Is Available
Mechanical Coverage is currently available in 47 U.S. states.
States where coverage is not currently available
Mechanical Coverage cannot currently be purchased for vehicles registered in:
- Florida
- Massachusetts
- California
If a vehicle is registered in one of these states, it is not eligible to purchase Mechanical Coverage at this time.

What Determines Eligibility?
To purchase Mechanical Coverage, the vehicle must meet several requirements, which may include:
- the state where the vehicle is registered
- the vehicle model year
- the vehicle mileage
- whether the vehicle is listed on Turo
If the vehicle is registered in Florida, Massachusetts, or California, the policy cannot be issued.
Does Coverage Follow the Car Across State Lines?
Yes—if the vehicle already has an active Mechanical Coverage policy, the coverage generally follows the vehicle when it is temporarily driven in another state.
This includes travel into states where coverage is not sold.
A temporary trip across state lines does not automatically cancel the policy.
However, a permanent relocation of the vehicle may require a policy review.
What Happens If the Car Breaks Down in Another State?
If a covered vehicle experiences a mechanical issue while traveling in another state, the policyholder can still start a claim.
The normal claims process still applies.
What to expect
- The claim must be reported through the standard claims process
- Repair authorization may still be required before work begins
- Unauthorized repairs may not be covered
- The policy deductible and coverage limits still apply
- All policy exclusions still apply

What Happens If the Car Is in Florida, Massachusetts, or California?
Mechanical Coverage cannot be purchased for vehicles registered in these states.
However, a vehicle that already has an active policy may temporarily travel through these states.
If the vehicle has a breakdown during that trip:
- the policyholder can still start a claim
- repairs may still require prior authorization
- coverage is still subject to deductibles, limits, and exclusions
Temporary travel into these states does not automatically end the policy.
Roadside Assistance While Traveling
If the policy includes Roadside Assistance, it can generally be used when the vehicle is temporarily in another state.
Roadside Assistance includes:
- $0 deductible
- $125 coverage limit for a single event
- $500 coverage limit over the life of the contract
- available only when included with a Mechanical Coverage policy
- not purchasable as a standalone product
Roadside Assistance is designed for roadside events and is handled separately from mechanical repair claims.
Important Limitations
Coverage does not expand when traveling
Driving into another state does not add coverage beyond what is included in the policy.
Repair authorization may still be required
Repairs may need to be approved before work begins. Unauthorized repairs may not be covered.
Exclusions still apply
Common exclusion categories include:
- maintenance items
- misuse or abuse
- modifications
- environmental damage
- cosmetic components
- unauthorized repairs
Common Questions
Can I buy coverage if my car is registered in Florida, Massachusetts, or California?
No. Mechanical Coverage is not currently available for vehicles registered in those states.
What if my covered car travels into one of those states?
Temporary travel into those states does not automatically cancel the policy.
If my car breaks down while traveling, do I still file a claim the same way?
Yes. The claim should still be reported through the normal claims process.
Does roadside assistance work out of state?
If Roadside Assistance is included with your policy, it can generally be used while the vehicle is temporarily traveling in another state.
What if I permanently move my vehicle to another state?
If the vehicle’s registration or primary location changes, the policy may need to be reviewed.
